We must end the toxic dominant narrative that portrays migration as a threat – it is a major driver of development and prosperity! At FEPS, we took action to change this narrative.

A fully packed room emphasised the demand for an honest and legitimate conversation on migration. The Progressive Migration Group—equally composed of African and European experts—presented its policy proposals on a human-rights and development approach to migration and asylum and recommendations on adopting a new narrative.

In this new episode, Ottilia A. Maunganidze, lawyer and Head of Special Projects in the office of the Executive Director at the Institute of Security Studies, based in South Africa, and member of the PMG, discusses the New Pact on Migration and Asylum from the viewpoint of African countries and the pressing need to abandon the current stagnant and toxic narratives on migration that portray migration as a threat when it is a major driver of development and prosperity.

This policy study examines the new solidarity mechanism under the Asylum and Migration Management Regulation, that tries to address the imbalances of the ‘Dublin’ rules. It shares forward-looking reflections on achieving fairer sharing of responsibility among member states.

It is the last Policy Study of the New Pact Implementation series.
