Happy Europe Day

200 years ago, the 9th symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven was performed for the first time in Vienna’s Kärntnertor theatre. This magnum opus gave Europe its anthem: Ode to Joy, which we sing or listen to whenever the EU needs to be celebrated. While listening to this enchanting melody, we should also think about the times that produced it. Ten years after the Vienna Congress, Beethoven knew that the peace that was established was not a just peace. The triumphant rulers did not only want to destroy and bury Napoleon’s imperial legacy but also the spirit of the French revolution: liberté, égalité and fraternité. Breaking tradition, Beethoven pulled out a poem by Friedrich Schiller, and added it to the last movement of the symphony. It had one central idea: universal brotherhood.

The anthem is there not just for entertainment but to inspire people with its political message. The same applies to the founding act of the European integration: the Schuman Declaration unveiled on 9 May 1950. The founders started to build the European institutions around two core principles: peace and solidarity. But to deliver these, organising production differently than before the wars was key. We should remember this, as we will go to the polls to elect the members of the European Parliament. Make no mistake, this is also a fight. Some want to boost, but others want to bury the spirit of Social Europe, the agenda of the Green Deal and the rule of law.

If the guidance in Beethoven’s song is followed, those who want all men and women to be brothers and sisters will prevail.

– László Andor, FEPS Secretary General

Open Day at the European Parliament

Last weekend, FEPS participated in the Europe Days at the European Parliament! We were delighted to see so many of you, where we got to interact and engage with our research directly. To see so many people engaging with us reiterated that the people are at the heart of the EU.

A massive thank you to everyone who stopped at our stand to talk with us, read our publications, and participate in our quiz! It was an incredible experience meeting so many individuals passionate about the EU. It was also an opportunity to emphasise how important it is to use your vote

This year’s Europe Day holds special significance as it comes just a month before the 2024 European elections. The significance of voting has rarely been more crucial. This 6-9 June, be sure to cast your vote at your local registry!

Use your vote

Use your vote. Or others will decide for you.

Let us remember the history of how people fought for their right to vote with a special video from the European Parliament. We should never take democracy for granted.

Find out more information about the election on the European Parliament’s website.
