Call to Europe Cyprus for “A progressive strategy for peace and cooperation in the Mediterranean” took place on May 30 at the University of Nicosia. Interpretation (EN-GR and GR-EN) was available.

Participants discussed key issues shaping the Mediterranean region and the European Union’s approach to the region, with speakers including:

  • Federica Mogherini, former Vice-President, European Commission & former High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, EEAS (2014–2019); former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy (2014)
  • Costas Mavrides, Member of the European Parliament, S&D Group 
  • Nicola Zingaretti, Member of the European Parliament, S&D Group
  • Hella Ben Youssef, Vice-President, Ettakatol; Vice-President, Socialist International Women 
  • Anna Diamantopoulou, former European Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights; President, DIKTIO – Network for Reform in Greece and Europe & Bureau Member, FEPS
  • Sophia Christodoulou Makri, President, EDEK Youth & Bureau Member of European Affairs, EDEK Socialist Party

Topics discussed ranged from:

  • Democratic resilience in North Africa
  • The Pact for The Mediterranean
  • Implications of the geopolitical crisis in the Middle East for the Mediterranean region

Taking place in the context of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the aim of Call to Europe is to stimulate a more positive, participatory, and progressive Europe by bringing together a wide range of progressive actors. These include representatives from progressive forces in Cyprus, across the European Union, the wider Mediterranean region, European institutions, civil society organisations and academia.

By FEPS, organised in cooperation with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D Group) in the European Parliament, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (Cyprus), Eteron – Institute for Research and Social Change (Greece), Fundación Avanza (Spain), Centro Studi di Politica Internazionale (CeSPI, Italy), Fondation Jean Jaurès (France), and the Movement for Social Democracy (EDEK) Socialist Party (Cyprus).
