On Thursday, 18 April 2024, FEPS, Karl-Renner-Institut and Fondation Jean-Jaurès presented the policy study ‘The transformation of the European mainstream right and its impact on (social) democracy‘.

The study tackles three critical issues based on the analysis of extensive data and detailed research in six case study countries, namely the EU Member States Austria, France, Germany, Poland, Spain and Sweden.

This study:

  • comprehensively investigates the (alleged) radicalisation of European centre-right parties
  • investigates the risks to liberal democracy of this transformation and how democracy can be safeguarded
  • analyses the implicit challenge for Social Democrats, with a focus on identifying  political responses that work

Together with co-authors, policymakers, and academics, we discussed the findings and policy recommendations in view of the upcoming European elections and discussed some of the country’s findings in more detail in break-out groups.

Prior to the event, a light lunch was served from 12:30-13:00.
