FEPS at the European Parliament’s Open Day!

FEPS was thrilled to be part of Europe Day at the European Parliament together with our progressive partners! With every Europe Day, we get to see democracy in action – and this year was no different!

It was great to see so many who were interested and engaged in the empirical evidence on the most crucial policy topics that impact the everyday lives of those who live in the EU.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped at our stand to talk with us, get to know our work and participate in our quiz!

This Europe Day also marked two important milestones: the 80th anniversary of the official end of the Second World War and the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration – a landmark in the history of European integration that laid the groundwork for the European Union.

Enlargement
A common new chapter for EU enlargement

20 MARCH – BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

A common new chapter on EU Enlargement

By FEPS, FES EU Office Brussels, Olof Palme International Center and Foundation Max van der Stoel (FMS)

The future of EU Enlargement policy is being affected by the clear shift to the (far) right in the geopolitical landscape, including Trump’s’ re-election.

This second conference on enlargement expanded the conversation on the future of EU accession process in the new geopolitical landscape.

Experts and policymakers, including Albin Kurti, Prime Minister of Kosovo, focused particularly on the socio-economic development of candidate countries with particular attention to youth and to the role that European nationalist and far-right forces play in the enlargement process.

The Balkan Focus policy brief series is realised in synergy with the Friends of the Western Balkans (FoWB) project. It provides the FoWB network with background analyses on current political developments in the Western Balkan countries, as well as on the debate and process of European enlargement. The policy briefs also factor in the outcome of the debate held by the FoWB members.

The implication of the Serbian students’ protests for Serbia and enlargement

Friends of the Western Balkans

By FEPS, FES, Progresiva, Karl Renner Institut, FMS, Kalevi Sorsa Foundation, Fondation Jean-Jaurès and Olof Palme International Center – In cooperation with S&D

In response to the deadly collapse of the concrete canopy at Novi Sad’s railway station and the ensuing anti-corruption protests, the Friends of the Western Balkans will discuss Serbia’s political awakening. Sparked by student-led demonstrations, the movement has already led to high-level resignations and is reshaping the country’s political landscape.

Social Democratic parliamentarians, experts and activists will examine the protests’ regional impact and implications for EU enlargement and discuss how to support democratic change.

Students in Serbia have been protesting for over 100 days, bravely calling for the rule rule of law and challenging Vučić’s regime. So far the EU’s response has been too weak. It is time for the EU to stop whispering, speak loud and act! Read more.

Financing our future: Towards the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development

The Pact for the Future, agreed by UN Member States in September 2024, provided momentum for accelerated action towards achieving the SDGs. Yet, the financing gaps for sustainable development are growing in the face of multiple crises, resulting in heavy costs of inaction for lower economically developing countries (LEDCs).

Building on FEPS’ previous contributions to the Pact for the Future through the book “A New Global Deal“, this event, co-organised with the UN Brussels office, will delve deeper into building a consensus on concrete actions for transformative changes in the global financial landscape. Register now!

Rethinking security through nuclear disarmament

With Florian Eblenkamp and Beatriz Abellán

Listen to the podcast

Do nuclear weapons prevent war? In this climate of militarisation and declining support for international law, some European countries are considering nuclear weapons a legitimate defence strategy, with calls even emerging for the development of a European nuclear programme.

In this episode, Florian Eblenkamp, Advocacy Officer at the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) – the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize-winning organisation – challenges the perceived dichotomy between disarmament and safety, insisting that the two can – and must – reinforce one another in any just and sustainable global order.

Stronger together! LGBTIQ+ rights vs anti-gender movements

LGBTIQ+ rights are human rights and are not negotiable! Conservative and illiberal forces are hijacking ‘gender’ using it against LGBTQI+ rights.

With this dossier, the Progressive Post has a twofold goal: first, to declare its unconditional support for LGBTIQ+ rights; and second, to shed light on the instrumentalisation of gender issues by right-wing extremist forces and parties:
