If you have problems displaying this email, follow this link

This November, the crucial global issues we are confronted with seem to have exacerbated: the appalling results of the US elections, the climate emergency with the tragic floods in Spain right before the start of the COP29, the ongoing European Parliament hearings with Commissioners-designate, alongside news of Germany’s snap elections, the mounting tensions over migration, including the reintroduction of temporary border controls…

It’s time for progressives to remain united, coordinated, and clear-minded. FEPS continues to contribute actively to the intellectual and political discussions needed in these challenging times. Here is some of our latest thinking on these critical issues.

World

Donald Trump’s return to the White House and a Republican majority in both the House of Representatives and Senate spell danger not only for domestic American politics but also for its ripple effects in the EU.

It should serve as a strong reminder for the EU to fully commit to implementing the UN Pact for the Future, fighting against the climate crisis and protecting equality, and democracy.

Implementing the New Pact

Solidarity, fundamental rights and effectiveness in asylum and migration management

The New Pact was intended to end years of disagreements among member states on migration policy. Yet, the October EU leaders Summit dramatically revealed that this goal has still not been achieved. What, then, remains of the New Pact before it has even been fully implemented?

Implementing the New Pact

Together with experts, policymakers, and civil society, we delved into the comprehensive changes, challenges and opportunities brought by the New Pact on Migration and Asylum – and explored how to ensure its effective implementation in the coming years.

The event also saw the participation of the authors of the New Pact Implementation series, by FEPS, FES EU office and EPC.

We presented the findings of our policy study ‘Algorithmic governance and co-determination in Norway which was featured on the Norwegian newspaper Klassekampen. This publication is part of the Digital Programme: Algorithms in the workplace, by FEPS and its Nordic partners.

A new Gender Equality Contract for Europe

Feminism and progressive politics

A book edited by Andrea Pető, Laeticia Thissen and Amandine Clavaud – By FEPS and Fondation Jean-Jaurès, published by Palgrave Macmillan

We’ve talked a lot about the gender backlash, but… How can we actually build positive narratives for gender equality?

Read the new open-access book “A New Gender Equality Contract for Europe,” which argues why gender equality should become a unifying force (the glue!) towards more egalitarian, solidaristic and caring societies.

Featuring gender experts from diverse disciplines and backgrounds across Europe, the book connects feminist academic intelligence with hands-on policymaking.

The topics include education, reproductive health, labour, care, cultural rights, democracy, climate, and Feminist Foreign Policy.

We need a new Gender Equality Contract for a fairer, more equal EU.

📅 On 10 December, in the context of European Gender Equality Week, the authors will present the book’s findings. Find out more!

Defending the Progressives’ positions in the new Commission

Article by Nicola Zingaretti, Head of the Italian S&D delegation in the European Parliament

The new European Commission is stepping through the hearings at the European Parliament to finally be confirmed by MEPs, take the mandate and start its work. The treaties provide that the European Parliament validates the nominees indicated by national governments. This is not a pure formality. Overseeing and monitoring what the new executive body is going to propose and implement is even more politically relevant today, as the majority of the commissioners are from right-wing parties. However, it is crucial to recall that the majority in the parliament can be resolute in applying an ambitious programme for the legislature to build hope for the future. Read more.
