It is time to address the elephant in the room: we are all coming out of a week of extremely draining heat. Those temperatures were not normal, and with another heatwave likely to hit us soon, we need to change things. A global problem requires a global solution. This week, we are taking part in S&D Africa Days, where we will look at climate and tax justice, and work together to identify long-term partnership measures to tackle these global issues.

However, these issues are not isolated – at the heart of this fight is the need to protect social rights around the world. In the last weeks, FEPS defended the EU’s social model in Porto, advanced feminist foreign policy, asked difficult questions about humanity and solidarity, explored the state of Social Democracy, and more.

18-19 JUNE – PORTO, PORTUGAL

Social Europe is our target

“Nothing else matters if Europe doesn’t work for people. Social Europe has delivered and will continue to deliver if we equip it to do so. The Social Pillar is a permanent reminder that a Social Europe is the only kind worth building. To me, that means a Europe that protects and empowers, especially in times of change.” – Roxana Minzatu, EU Commission Executive Vice-President at FEPS conference.

Social Europe is our target

Five years after the Porto Social Summit, high-level policymakers and experts – including EC VP Roxana Minzatu – gathered in Porto to put social rights back at the heart of the EU, at a time when the EU’s economic and geopolitical priorities are increasingly focused on competitiveness, deregulation and increased defence spending.

FEPS President Nicolas Schmit, PS Secretary General José Luís Carneiro, MEPs Estelle Ceulemans and Gabriele Bischoff, former EU Commissioner Elisa Ferreira and former Eurogroup President Mário Centeno, were also among the high-level speakers.

Members of the Feminist Foreign Policy Progressive Voices Collective – led by FEPS, in collaboration with FES EU Office and the strategic partners – met online to build on the outcomes of the 5th FFP Ministerial Conference held in Madrid and prepare inputs for the next EU Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). The meeting was co-chaired by Ann Linde and Machris Cabreros.

Cuba at a crossroads

Why Europe must lead with principles, solidarity and dialogue

By Leire Pajín, S&D MEP, first vice-president of the Eurolat parliamentary assembly & the EuroLat S&D coordinator

When we do not condemn violations of the United Nations Charter, human rights or humanitarian law, regardless of who violates them, Cuba or the United States, we fail to protect the Cuban as well as the American people, and we put all of us, including Europeans, in danger. Because only an international community united against impunity is strong enough to ensure that no state abuses its military and coercive power against another one, and no government abuses it against ordinary citizens.
