Ahead of the Global Progressive Mobilisation 2026, from 15 to 18 April 2026, FEPS brought together members of the Next Left Research Focus Group and the Progressive Pollsters Network in Barcelona for a series of discussions on the future of European social democracy and the development of a progressive European doctrine.

The meeting provided an opportunity for researchers, political actors and progressive practitioners from across Europe to exchange perspectives on the challenges facing social democratic parties in a rapidly changing political and economic environment. Discussions explored the evolving political landscape, public opinion and the priorities that progressive forces need to address to develop credible, forward-looking political strategies.

The programme also included a dedicated session on Catalonia as a progressive reference for Europe, bringing together representatives of the Catalan progressive movement and political and research institutions. Participants discussed Catalonia’s experience and its potential contribution to broader European progressive debates, alongside a visit to the Barcelona City Council.

The Barcelona meeting formed part of the ongoing work of the FEPS Next Left Research Programme, which brings together progressive thinkers and political actors to reflect on the future of social democracy and contribute to the development of new ideas for progressive politics in Europe.
